Bank game: savings and fixed deposits at Harbour Bank in Malta Living

By

Want a bank game that teaches you something real? Harbour Bank has opened on Republic Street in Valletta in Malta Living, the free life sim played in your browser. Walk in, take a ticket, and the teller on shift asks what you'd like today. It's always open, and nothing about it makes your money harder to use.

Harbour Bank's deposit sheet on a phone: the teller's face, four product cards with savings picked, €200 and what it grows to each week

Your wallet is your account

There's one balance, as before. Your wallet is your Harbour Bank current account, and everything still pays from it. Deposit moves money from your account into savings, a fixed deposit or the Island savings bond. Withdraw moves it back. You can do both at the counter, or from the green money card on the bank's panel. It counts up to everything you have with the bank, shows how much of it is growing, when the next interest lands, and how far your fixed deposit has to go. Tap it to deposit, withdraw or borrow.

Meet the staff

Joy works the morning, Daniela the middle of the day, and Kwame the afternoon and evening. Marisa, the adviser you know from the Bank app, now has an office in the back, and Sanjay watches the door. The teller on shift greets you right on the bank's panel: when it's quiet, tap Go to the counter and she asks what you'd like. They say something back when you've done it, and regulars get a "Back again?".

The queue

At Friday lunchtime, weekday lunch and the hour around 18:00, when pay lands, the hall fills up. You wait up to about two and a half minutes, and something's always going on: a pensioner paying in coins, a toddler pressing every button on the ticket machine. Fill in your slip while you wait, and when your number comes up it's one tap at the counter. Mornings are quiet.

Picking where your money goes

Depositing shows each product as a card: savings, the Island bond, and fixed deposits for 28 or 90 days, each with what it pays and how long the money stays in. Type an amount and you see what it grows to before you pay it in, and what the teller thinks of your choice. When it goes in, a PAID IN stamp lands and you see what moved where. Savings that pay every week

Easy-access savings pay 0.2% a week on what stays in all week, every seventh day at 18:00, on up to €50,000. Take it out whenever you like. Money you add earns from its next week, so the timing can't be gamed.

Lock it away for more

A fixed deposit pays more because the bank knows it can use your money for longer: 28 days pays 2.4% at the end, and 90 days pays 9%. It comes back with the interest at 18:00 on its last day. Each one takes €100 to €50,000, and you can have three open. Need it early? Break it and you get it back less 1%, with no interest. Want more than the bank pays, and happy to take a risk? Money lessons

The first time you open a product, a Money lesson card explains the idea with a picture and puts the real Malta number next to the game's, both big, side by side. Each lesson stays in Help & guide, under Money. Easy-access savings at BOV pay about 0.6–0.8% a year, BOV stopped taking new fixed-term deposits in 2022, and the 62+ Malta Government Savings Bond paid 2.70% a year in 2025. The game's rates run faster, so a month here shows what years do in real life.
