Jobs in Malta Living: careers, shifts and promotions

By · Updated

Work is the backbone of a life in Malta Living, the Malta life simulator. Here's how its life sim jobs and careers work: finding a job, working a shift and getting promoted. Every job is at a place on the map, most of them real workplaces, pays about what a real day of that job pays here, and has six ranks to climb.

A shift at The Phoenicia: a situation card says the manager asks you to stay late on a Friday again, with two answers, and below it the shift strip shows Commis Waiter, €8.28 of €55 so far, the boss, team and you cues, and three moves

Finding a job in Malta Living

Open Jobs on your phone. If you don't have a job yet, it shows every career as a tile, sorted by chips: Hotels, Tech, Care, Outdoors, Sights, Shops, Building and Public. There are thirteen careers, each tied to one place:

  • Hospitality at The Phoenicia in Floriana, starting as a Commis Waiter on €55 a shift
  • iGaming (online gaming) customer support at SOHO The Strand in Gżira
  • Nursing at Mater Dei, in real life Malta's main public general hospital in Msida
  • Content at Lovin Malta, tourism on the Sliema Promenade, and beach safety at Golden Bay
  • Nightlife in Paceville, the club district of St Julian's, with shifts from 23:00
  • The civil service at Identità, the agency for residence papers (Maltese citizens only)
  • Retail at Lidl in Mosta, entertainment at Popeye Village, the Malta National Aquarium, and heritage at Ħaġar Qim and Mnajdra
  • Crane operations at the Paola Building Site, Monday to Saturday from 07:00

Every career runs on one skill, and a tile says if you need more of it first ("🔒 Fitness 1"). Tap Apply and your first shift is tomorrow. Taking a job registers it with Jobsplus, Malta's public employment service, automatically, as a real job would be. Nursing and the civil service also ask for a clean certificate of conduct from Valletta Police Station.

If you arrived as a tourist, you can take a job offer, but you need a single permit from Identità before you can work it. That mirrors the island itself, where the single permit lets non-EU nationals live and work here for a named employer. Our guide to arriving as a tourist, on a permit or as a local explains the game's papers.

What a shift is like

A shift lasts ten minutes of real time, at your workplace. When it's due, a card asks you to go and Jobs gets a red dot. Tap Not now and it waits: for most jobs you can go any time until midnight.

At work, one strip at the bottom of the screen shows the time left, what you've earned so far and your Performance, with the map still in view. Every 90 seconds a situation comes up, a short moment from your job with two answers. At The Phoenicia it might be a guest saying their steak is too rare. A good answer adds 8% performance, a bad one takes 10%, and one you leave unanswered while you're in the game costs 4%.

You also get three moves: Work extra hard, Suck up to the boss and Help a colleague. Above them sit three cues: whether the boss is busy or relaxed, whether the team is watching, and whether you're fresh, tired or exhausted. Read them before you tap, because a move can backfire. Leave early tells you what you'd be paid and what you'd miss.

In Jobs you can also switch on Go automatically. If you don't make it, your shift is covered when the work day ends (midnight for most jobs), but it pays 80% of what going yourself pays and teaches you less.

How promotions work

Each career has six ranks. Hospitality runs from Commis Waiter at €55 a shift to General Manager at €405; crane operations from Crane Signaller at €60 to Head of Lifting at €240. To move up you need:

  1. Good shifts. Work your shifts yourself and do them well: your performance counts.
  2. The career's skill at the level the next rank asks for.
  3. A degree, for some top ranks: IT for iGaming, tourism for tours (both at the University of Malta), and nursing, taught at Mater Dei.

Jobs always shows what stands between you and the next rank, in one line. If your skill isn't there yet, you keep your job and your pay; only the promotion waits.

Skills, and keeping them

Tap Learn › under a skill to see every way to train it, from classes to your own shifts, each with a Go. A skill can learn up to 75 points a day, and skills slip slowly if you stop using them, but never below what your rank needs while you hold the job. The civil service works in Maltese, so our guide to Maltese phrases for beginners helps if Identità is your goal. For money between shifts, the Earn app's daily missions and odd jobs fill the gaps.
