Night school: study when it suits you in Malta Living

By

Malta Living runs on Malta's own clock, and that's part of the fun, until your evening is Malta's small hours. So this is a night school life sim now: a player who works nights asked for night courses, the way some schools open in the evening for people who work during the day, and every course in Malta Living has a night school too.

A course's sheet on a phone: BA Tourism, Day school and Night school as two picture tiles, Night school picked, with Mon–Fri 18:00–02:00 and Sat–Sun 16:00–00:00, and the Enrol at night school button

The hours

Night school runs Monday to Friday 18:00–02:00 and Saturday and Sunday 16:00–00:00, Malta time. That's eight hours a weeknight, seven nights a week, on top of day school (the University and Mater Dei teach 08:00–21:00 on weekdays, and the Lifelong Learning Hub in the morning and early evening).

It's the same course: the same lectures, the same exams, the same certificate and the same fees. A degree you finish at night opens the same jobs as one you finish in the day. Only the hours, the room and the people change. After dark the lecture hall is lit by warm lamps, the windows are dark, there are fewer people about, and the night teachers take over: Dr Marthese at the University, Charles at the Lifelong Learning Hub and Nurse Rose on Mater Dei's night ward.

Day or night, your choice

Tap your course at the University, the Hub or Mater Dei. Before you enrol you pick Day school or Night school, each shown with its hours and its teacher. Once you're on a course, two chips let you switch, free and either way, whenever you like. The sheet tells you exactly what changes before anything does, so there are no surprises.

If you keep missing classes (three of your last five class days), the game offers the other window once in a while: one tap and you've switched. It asks at most once a week, never in the middle of something, and "Not now" is remembered on every phone you play on.

After midnight

A class after midnight counts for the night before. If you sit Monday's class at 00:10, it's still Monday night's, and your next one is Tuesday night. It's still one class a day, whichever window you pick, so staying up late never gets you a second class.

The bell rings every 10 minutes through the night. The last bell is at 01:50 on weeknights. Night students sit with night students, and the weekly class rank is per window, so you're ranked with the people at your hours. If you study at night, Sunday nights count towards your class streak.

Working evenings too? If tonight's class and your shift window are both open, your shift card puts them in order: class first, two minutes, then work. Flexible shifts let you pick a late clock-in window.

Playing from abroad

If your phone is set to another time zone, the course shows night school's hours in your time too, and night school wears a "Suits your time" chip when it fits your day better. From Buenos Aires, night school is 14:00–22:00, and from New York it's 12:00–20:00. The game itself stays on Malta time.

Evening classes in Malta itself, at the University of Malta and the Lifelong Learning Centre, usually end around 21:00. Night school till 02:00 is the game's way of opening the island to players in every time zone.

Questions people ask

Is night school cheaper or easier than day school?

No. It's the same course, the same lectures and exams, the same fees and the same certificate. Only the hours and the people in the room change.

Can I go to a day class and a night class on the same day?

No, it's one class a day per course, whichever window you're in. A class after midnight counts for the night before, so you can't get two in one night either.

What if I switch after today's class?

That's fine. Your next class is simply the next school day in your new window, and your lectures, exams and streak carry on.

Why does the course show two different times?

When your phone is in another time zone, the course shows Malta's time and yours, so you can see when night school falls in your own day.
