Learn: real lessons, Money basics and the class bell in Malta Living

By

In most life sims, school is a timer: you sit, a bar fills, a number goes up. Malta Living, the free life sim you play in your browser, now does it the way an educational life sim should: every class is a real lesson. You put Malta's story in order, match Maltese words, spot the scam in a message, and you leave knowing a little more than when you sat down. Here's how lessons, Money basics, the class bell and the new Learn app fit together.

A lesson on a phone: round 3 of 5 with two stars and a 1:09 timer, the teacher asking who came first, and cards placed beside 1530, 1565 and 1798, with Independence and The British arrive still to place

Five quick rounds, five kinds of lesson

A class is a short game of five rounds, or eight in an exam. A how-to comes first, so you always know what a round wants from you. The rounds come in five kinds:

  • Cards into their years. Drop each card beside its year. Malta's story runs 1530, 1565, 1798, 1800 and 1964, from the Knights arriving to Independence (the history, if you want more).
  • Match pairs. Maltese words and their English, like skola and school.
  • Quiz cards. Pick the right answer.
  • Spot it. Find the bug in a line of code, or the scam in a message.
  • Tiny sims. Money basics has its own small money situations to play through.

Each tap is judged as you make it. A right one stays, a wrong one bounces back so you can try again, and nothing is ever taken away. A round you get right first time is a star and +2 of the course's skill, up to +10 a class. The daily cap of 75 still applies. A lesson plays for 75 seconds, so a class fits into a coffee break.

Money basics with Marisa, free for everyone

At the Lifelong Learning Hub in Msida, Marisa from Harbour Bank teaches Money basics. It's free for everyone, tourists too. There are six lessons:

  1. Your week's pots, with your own pay and rent from the game, shown only to you.
  2. Saving.
  3. Interest.
  4. Loans and your score.
  5. Shares and risk.
  6. Spot the scam.

Then comes the money test. Finish the course and you have a new skill, Money, plus a certificate, and the Bank's Money badge turns gold. The course pays no money: what you take away is the idea. These are ideas, not advice about your real money. For that, Malta's financial regulator, the MFSA, is the place to start.

The class bell

Places that teach ring a bell every 10 minutes. Tap Go to class and you take a seat for the next one. You wait with your classmates, the teacher greets you, and the lesson starts when the bell rings. Don't feel like waiting? Tap Start now and do it on your own.

Study buddies

When a friend sits at a bell for a course you're on too, you get their invite, "Sit together?", with Go there to take you straight to them. A friend who starts at the same bell with you is your study buddy. That's one more star for the class, and it counts as chatting between the two of you.

Players you've blocked are never seated with you, and they never invite you.

The Learn app and your CV

Learn sits in row 5 of your phone's apps. It's the guide to everything you can learn, in four tabs:

  • Today: the next bell, the course you're nearest to finishing, and today's Money lesson.
  • Places: where each course is taught.
  • Skills: each skill's level and where it's taught.
  • Mine: your certificates, badges and your CV.

The lessons themselves still happen at the place, and every Go there takes you.

Your CV is built only from what you've done in this life: your courses, your certificates and the jobs you've held, with their dates. You never type it, so nobody's CV can be padded, and it never shows your pay, your money or your home. Every job you take from jobs and careers lands on it with its dates.

Where to start

Money basics is the easy first step: it's free, it's at the Hub, and Marisa's first lesson uses your own week. If you'd rather start with words, the Maltese course is there too, and our guide to Maltese phrases for beginners shows what it teaches. New to the game? The Malta life simulator guide covers the rest of the island.
